Once only a holiday that acknowledged romantic love, Valentine’s Day now celebrates the love of friendship and familial love! So let’s take Valentine’s Day to a new level by loving on our children with quality time spent together and some cool gifts for kids.

What was Valentine’s Day like when you were growing up?

Did you receive something memorable, maybe a special treat or an awesome gift?

Growing up in our house, Valentine’s Day was for everyone! We always received a heart-shaped box of chocolates from See’s Candy. It was a memorable treat that was well-curated with all of my favorite flavors. We knew it was special because we only received it once a year on Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect time to express all types of love. Whether it is romantic love or love for our family and friends. We can show love to our children, siblings, parents, grandparents, friends, and neighbors.

Let’s look at some cool gifts for kids that will leave them feeling loved long after the sugar rush!

Give The Gift Of Time

Be generous with your time. Set aside quality time for playing a game or reading a book. How about spending the afternoon baking cookies for friends and neighbors? Or would you rather make a special snack together for movie night?

How about a love-themed movie night?

Gather the family, grab some Valentine’s treats, and get comfy to watch one of these family-friendly movies.

  • Beauty and the Beast
  • Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown
  • Cinderella
  • Enchanted
  • Gnomeo & Juliet
  • Lady and the Tramp
  • Madly Madagascar
  • Shrek
  • Up
  • Wall-E

“Children don’t need more things. The best toys a child can have is a parent who gets down on the floor and plays with them.”

Whatever activities you choose, focus on quality time and give them your undivided attention.

Give The Gift Of Play

Giving the gift of play is one of the most valuable gifts we can give our children. Set aside time to make scented playdough and create “pretend” Valentine’s chocolates. Or engage in a variety of block activities. Try a red Valentine-themed sensory bin.

Valentine games for preschoolers to try:

Have a Valentine-themed game night.

  • Try bingo, a heart-shaped matching game, Valentine charades, or “Cupid Says” (A Valentine version of Simon Says.)
  • Set out a Valentine-themed or heart-shaped puzzle the week before and work on it each night, completing it on Valentine’s Day.
  • Set up a block maze, obstacle course, or relays with giant cardboard bricks. Find more Gross Motor Activities for Preschoolers here.

Organize a Valentine-themed scavenger or treasure hunt.

This is a fun family favorite! Create clues to guide everyone to the final prize. It could be a gift basket with some Valentine treats like a personalized stuffed animal or “lovie.” You know, something soft and cuddly! Perhaps some new love-themed pajamas. If there will be treats and candy, you may include a toothbrush in your child’s favorite color.

If you prefer, instead of one big prize at the end you could include cool presents for kids along the way. For example, here are some cool toy ideas:

  • Art supplies like heart-shaped crayons, markers, colored pencils
  • Love themed puzzles for puzzle night
  • Playdough colored and scented to make it special
  • Small stuffed animals
  • Tegu Pocket Pouch
  • Valentine stickers
  • Valentine’s book (see some suggestion below)

Give The Gift Of Reading

Books and reading are the gifts that keep on giving. Read about ways to show love and why it is important. Use storybooks as a fun way to teach life lessons and share about giving and loving. Books make wonderful gifts that children will treasure forever —choose ones that model different love types for one another and acceptance.
